Hello friends! We are delighted to continue our Cherokee Heroes series and introduce you to this month’s Cherokee Hero, Graham Valley. Graham has been a nurse for over two years and works in the Emergency Department at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. He always knew that he wanted to work in Critical Care, and he thinks one day he may eventually go into Medical Transport. His favorite part of his job is the randomness and spontaneity of the Emergency Department and the fact that each night is different from the next. He says that having the opportunity to truly help children while working with amazing and talented coworkers is what makes his job “incredibly enjoyable.” Plus, Graham really likes working the nightshift and doesn’t see that changing anytime soon.
Here are some fun facts about Graham:
- He describes himself as energetic and outgoing.
- He finds his work to be rewarding, very fun and incredible.
- He enjoys anything music-related, and he does a lot of writing. In fact, music and journaling help him unwind from work and life in general.
- As a kid, he always wanted to be a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, not only because the turtles talked to humans, but because he loved pizza!
Graham would like to tell new nurses to stick with it. He urges them to listen and take everything in that they can, test out new skills and try out new things. Specifically, for men pursuing nursing, he hopes that they disregard any resistance they may face and fight any stigmas, as “men can be just as powerful in that profession.” Graham enthusiastically proclaims, “Go into nursing!” And we are certainly glad that Graham followed his own advice.
