An avid ocean swimmer, this veteran pediatric intensive care nurse opens up about her joys and challenges as a nurse and the source of her inspiration. If you could give only one piece of advice to a new grad in your profession what would it be?

    Mary Ellen,
Your comments and the emotion with which they were delivered, brought tears to my eyes. May the Lord bless you and keep you, may his face smile upon you and be gracious to you, may his countenance be upon you and give you peace. Numbers 6: 24-26. Amen

      Dear Deborah,

Thank you so much for very kind words. How I treasure them! I met your daughter Kathleen a few weeks before this shoot. I transferred a patient from the Radiology department back to her floor. I was struck by how beautiful and loving your daughter is. She was so loving and caring towards her patient and her mother. I was so happy to see her at the shoot and to spend some time with her. My hope is that she’ll have a long and meaningful career as a nurse. It truly is a wonderful career!

      Blessings to you,

      Mary Ellen

Thank you so much for everything you said. I’ve been nursing about a year and a half now and have gotten so discouraged bc I feel like I am the only person at my facility who cares for their patients.

It’s so nice to see someone like you who cares that much too. You inspired me.

Also thank you for the advice. Exercise, find a hobby, don’t take it home with you. All things I needed to hear. Again, thank you.
